The Bike Program Checkout Policy exists to facilitate community access to bicycles, allowing patrons to explore our city in a healthy and environmentally friendly way.
1. Bicycle Types & Availability
We offer bicycles in two (2) frame sizes: small and large. There are three (3) small-framed bicycles and two (2) full-frame bicycles. The number of bicycles available for checkout may vary. We recommend calling the library in advance to check availability.
2. Eligibility
Account Standing
The borrower must have an active Ottawa Library account in good standing. The home library for the borrower’s account must be Ottawa Library. The borrower’s account must not contain any administrative restrictions regarding bicycles. Borrower’s must have a home address. A PO Box alone will not be accepted. A working phone number is required.
Borrower Age
Bicycles may only be directly checked out by adults. Teens, ages 12-17, may checkout bicycles with their guarantor, parent, or guardian that holds an Ottawa Library Card in good standing present to sign the checkout agreement.
Government Issued Photo ID.
The borrower must present a valid government issued photo ID along with an active library card. A photocopy of the government issued ID will be attached to the checkout agreement.
3. Checkout
Checkout Process
Patrons wishing to checkout bicycles, must complete the Checkout Agreement each time they checkout a bicycle. This process can be started by speaking with a staff member at the Circulation Desk.
Once the Checkout Agreement has been read and completed, a photocopy will be made of the agreement and the borrower’s photo ID. The original will be returned to the borrower and the copy will be held at the Circulation Desk.
Staff will go outside with the patron while completing a pre-checkout inspection. Once inspection is complete, staff will scan the respective keychain to check out the bicycle to the patron’s account.
Loan Period & Renewals
Bicycles check out for one week. Bicycles may be renewed up to two (2) times, subject to availability.
Returns
Bicycles must be returned to the library during regular operating hours. Bicycles must be returned in the same condition they were borrowed in. Returns should include the bicycle, lock, and key. Staff will inspect the bicycle during the check-in process while the patron is present.
Late Fees
Bicycles not returned by the end of the due date will accrue late fees at the rate of $10 per day. At seven (7) days overdue, an invoice will be sent to the borrower. At fourteen (14) days overdue, the bicycle will be reported stolen.
Holds
Bicycles can be placed on hold.
Damage or Theft
Patrons are responsible for any damage to the bicycle during the checkout period. Replacement or repair costs can be requested from the Circulation Manager.
