Books:  Our collection houses books and research materials that have been compiled by the Franklin County Historical Society.   Cemetery Records, Census Books, First Families of Franklin County, and more can be found in the genealogy area.  We have a Kansas section and an American Indian section as well.

Microfilm: Our collection includes the weekly Ottawa Herald newspapers dating Mar. 1889 – Mar. 1915, the Daily Herald Nov. 1896 – Sept. 2014, Ottawa Times from July 1937-Aug. 2000, the Territorial Census 1855- 1859, and the Franklin County Census 1860-1925.  These files can be viewed with our new digital microfilm machines, and documents can also be printed.

Maps: We house the Plat Book of Franklin County 1903, the Franklin County Rural Atlas and Directory of 1958 (complete with photos of homes), and the Franklin County Historical Homes records.

First Families of Franklin County: First Families of Franklin County is a certification program organized by Ottawa Library and Franklin County Historical Society to document early Franklin County residents.  The purpose is to aid family and local history researchers and to honor these early settlers.  The program documents people who lived in Franklin County prior to January 1, 1901 and requires two proofs of residence.

Pick up an application for the program at Ottawa Library or at Franklin County Historical Society Archives or request that one be mailed to you.  You may also download the Application Form (doc) or (pdf), Family Group Sheet, and Pedigree Chart. Include a copy of each of these with your application. They are in pdf format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader, a free program available at www.adobe.com.

Once your application is reviewed and approved, the material will be placed in a file at Ottawa Library’s local history section for the use of other researchers.  Franklin County Historical Society will issue a certificate of appreciation at their next annual meeting which is usually held around the end of January.
